The multi-talented OLUGBENGA – bassist from Metronomy and respected muso, DJ and remixer in his own right – has produced a delightfully mashed-up mixtape, built from samples and re-edits of tracks by bands that no longer exist but that played a significant part in his musical history.
Interview with OLUGBENGA
For those who don’t know you, give us an introduction you are…
OLUGBENGA. All caps. Bass player in Metronomy, laptop DJ, remixer.
What did you do at the weekend?
I played a show with Metronomy in Tours, a lovely city about two hours south of Paris. We drove, so Friday and Sunday were mostly spent sitting in a van watching Boardwalk Empire and working on a remix.
Tell us how you got into music, and doing what you do now
I grew up singing with my Von Trappe-style family. Then I sang in a gospel choir. Was briefly in a hip-hop outfit called Tribes of the Most High with some friends from church (we were young, what can I say?). Fastforward a few years, and I was singing for a dubstep outfit called Various Production and started touring with them and a couple of other bands. Then I got an email from a mutual friend asking if I was interested in trying out for Metronomy. In the last year (while Joe Mount finished the new album), I taught myself how to DJ with Ableton Live and started doing remixes.

If you could work with anyone in the world, who would it be?
I don't know if I'd want to work with him (frankly, I'd be too scared). But I'd love to watch Trent Reznor put an album together. Ideally one with Alan Moulder involved.
Also, I would have loved to see Jay Dilla put a beat together. Apparently it only took him about 15mins to make a classic. Could we maybe just get the universe to send him back for 15mins?
Foods…
Peanut butter and cheese on toast (seriously - ultimate snack!), Duck gyoza (ideally from Ping Pong Spitalfields), Pounded Yam and okra soup (Nigerian Sunday afternoon classic).

We talk excusively to Scroobius Pip prior to the realise of his new single and his new club night in London & Southend - WE ARE LIZARDS. See what he had to say below.
Interview with Scroobius PIP
WHAT YOU CAN CLUBBERS EXPECT FROM YOUR CLUBNIGHT? Everything they have ever dreamt of! Of course! I dont know really, the aim is just for it to be a real mixture. Its not a Hip Hop night. Its not an Indie night. Its not a dance night. The instructions I’m giving the DJs and myself is just to play stuff that sounds amazing in a club. Big songs, obscure songs, anything that makes you pleased to be hearing it through a big sound system.
WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MUSICAL MEMORY? Thats tough. I remember buying the Last Action Hero soundtrack and, as stupid and irrelevant as that sounds, skimming through and listening to AC/DC then Cypress Hill. Thats a pretty decent range!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST EVER GIG YOU WENT TO? I can never remember which one ws first as, in the same week, i went to see Offspring at Brixton Academy (Ignition/Smash era...NOT “Pretty Fly for a White Guy” era...) and the Rolling Stones at wembley. Two very different shows but both absolutely amazing.
WHO WOULD BE IN YOUR FANTASY BAND? Drew Barrymore, Megan Fox, Scarlett Johansson... oh... fantasy as in any MUSICIANS together? Right... well I’d sling Prince and Bruce Springsteen both on guitar with Kate Bush and Cyndi Lauper switching between backing and main vocals. Matt Freeman from Rancid on bass and this guy called Jamire Williams on drums. He plays with an amazing Trumpet player called Christian Scott. Hell let’s sling Christian in the line up while we are at it.... IF YOU COULD
GO BACK IN TIME WHAT MUSICAL FIGURE WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET? Well, when i was growing up and i got really into Jimi Hendrix i was always stunned that he had once played in Grays (small town near to my smaller town) so I think i would pick Jimi as it would have been a local visit WHICH NEW
WHICH NEW ARTISTS ARE MAKING THE RIGHT NOISES OUT THERE? So many. Sound of Rum are amazing me on a regular basis. Josh Weller has been tearing it up for a while now and is just getting better and better. Aloosh look like they have big things ahead of them. And B Dolan and P.O.S are both making big waves in the underground Hip Hop scene in America. Oooh but those Odd Future kids (Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, etc) are doing AMAZING stuff right now. Crazy young, crazy offensive but REAL good.
WHY SHOULD PEOPLE COME TO YOUR CLUBNIGHT? I just think its going to be a real good mix of sounds that hopefully pulls in a equally mixed crowd who can all enjoy it! Each night will have a killer live act kicking things off as well.

WHAT YOU CAN CLUBBERS EXPECT FROM YOUR CLUBNIGHT? I think it will be a very laid back chilled out atmosphere with lots of cool lovely people & classic electronic music.
WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MUSICAL MEMORY? Probably getting chills from listening to my Mum's vinyl copy of Phil Spector's Greatest Hits record & thinking what an amazing emotive sound the Ronettes made.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CLUBBING EXPERIENCE? My very first club was a gay night at the Embassy club on a Sunday in London & just feeling very intimidated by how good looking all the men were & thinking that none of them would ever fancy me. Also seeing Boy George & Marilyn at Heaven & I was basically in awe of them.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST EVER GIG YOU WENT TO? The first gig I ever went to was Joe Jackson at the Wirrina in Peterborough, the second was Siouxsie & the Banshees & she did the whole gig in a wheelchair 'cause she'd broken her leg, the third was Japan at De Montfort Hall in Loughborough.
WHO WOULD BE IN YOUR FANTASY BAND? Frida, Lady Ga Ga, Madonna, Annie Lennox & Donna Summer & Giorgio Moroder
GO BACK IN TIME WHAT MUSICAL FIGURE WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET? Klaus Nomi & Mario Lanza & Yma Sumac.
WHAT ARE YOU TOP FIVE TRACKS OF ALL TIME? Fade to Grey....Visage, Wow..... Kate Bush, Bird Song..... Lene Lovich, I'm Always ( Touched By your Presence Dear ).... Blondie & Summer Night City..... Abba
WHICH NEW ARTISTS ARE MAKING THE RIGHT NOISES OUT THERE? Beyonce, Rhianna, Lady Ga Ga, Miss Kittin, Ladytron & Robyn ( not all that new i know ), call me old fashioned.
WHY SHOULD PEOPLE COME TO YOUR CLUBNIGHT? Because it wont be like homogenised gay crap!

What about your favourite artist of all time? What is the attraction? Oooft. Erm, Orbital. They meant so much to me and I have everything on vinyl.
If we could grant you a wish to meet one musician or band, who would it be and why? What question would you ask them? David Bowie. Because he's a genius and I'd ask him 'How?'
Name a song that never fails to pick you up Lego by The Maccabees
And one that chills you out... Korridor by Plastikman
What was the first gig you attended The Levellers at Leicester De Montford hall, supported by Credit To The Nation. It was mesmerising, because I'd never experienced a gig before.
Tell us about your favourite record shop or online store, and what the appeal is Selectadisc in Nottingham. I grew up with it and found a clear vinyl copy of In Utero by Nirvana 3 days before it was released. I love Rough Trade East now I live in London, because of it's music ethics.
You can step into the shoes of your musical idol for 24 hours. Who do you choose and what would you do? Björk. What would I do? Find out what the hell's going on, sing...and play with myself.
Is there a new or undiscovered artist that you think we need to hear? Spill the beans. Tribes are amazing as are Duologue. Though there's lots of great emerging artists. Totally Extinct Enormous Dinosaurs are ace.
You can banish one artist to the bargain bin. Who do you choose? Mika

What did you do at the weekend?
Last weekend, I went Bowling, watched 'Aloosh' at the wilmington arms, attended a house warming party, finished season 1 of 'The Sopranos'.
Tell us how you got into music, and doing what you do now…
Im not initially from a musical family...
In my early teens, guitar bands like Oasis, Blur, Supergrass and the Manics were nestled in amongst all the other Tripe flooding the charts, I prefered guitar music to Dance music. My twin brother (Jim, also drummer in Baddies) decided to learn drums and start a band, I was insanely jealous, so taught myself how to play 'smells like teen spirt' badly on guitar and then invited myself to join the band!
After playing guitar and bass in other bands, I now Write, Sing and play guitar in Baddies and we are currently writing our second record.

For those who don’t know you, give us an introduction you are…
Hi I’m Sunta. When I’m not playing records and dancing around in clubs I'm playing records and saying stuff on Xfm.
What did you do at the weekend?
DJ’d the launch of HMV’s Next Big Thing Festival, got a new tattoo, had a Waggamamas, presented The Weekender on Xfm, went out for a mates Birthday drinks in Islington, cooked a curry, presented the Sunday night show on Xfm and watched Come Dine With Me on catch up.
Tell us how you got into music, and doing what you do now…
How I got into music? It’s just always been there – from my dads Louis Armstrong records to my mum taping Live Aid off of the radio and my brother Djing techno on his first bedroom decks. I’m not good at playing instruments so decided playing other peoples records on the radio was a good way of working in the music industry. Then I realised if I played other peoples records in clubs too and I would always have the best night out.
