| SINGLE REVIEW How do you follow up an album that was declared brilliant by pretty much everyone who heard it? Do you push your music as far as it can go, incorporating strange new instruments and styles? Do you consolidate your success with an all-round bigger sound aimed at the festival crowds? Or do you, like the Arcade Fire, release the musical equivalent of a shrug? I've listened to this song about 10 times now, and I still can't remember how it goes. It starts well, with the sound of an orchestra tuning up and a popping bass line The Cure would be proud of. However, 3 minutes later it transpires that nothing has actually happened and the song is over - this from the band who gave us "Rebellion (Lies)" just two short years ago. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for forthcoming album "Neon Bible", but this is a distinctly underwhelming choice for a first single. 2/5 Ben Duncan www.arcadefire.com |
